The Darra Street Festival is now in its 14th year of operation. Originally setup to show case the local area to the locals it also aimed to provide locals with a low cost alternative to going to the Ekka. Thirteen years later and the event has grown from strength to strength with the entire commercial half of Railway Parade being closed to traffic to allow rides, games, foods from around the world, local bands and street performers entertain the thousands of local residents who turn up to the event.
The 2015 event is shaping up to be bigger and better than ever before with food stalls from 12 different nationalities and some of Brisbane’s best bands showcasing their wares on the main stage. The event is still very cost effective for locals with unlimited rides wristbands available for only $5 and can be bought at the event.
As the event has grown, the event committee has worked hard to ensure that other local community organisations are given the opportunity to join in. In 2014 over $10,000 was raised across the community stalls, this is fantastic for the local community as that money is then put back into programs and events for the local cmomunity. The 2015 and 2016 event had over 20 different community organisations involved, from local schools and sporting clubs to service clubs such as Rotary and charities such as Buy a Bale, Montrose Access and Life Without Barriers.
